Antonio Pompilio Gigante

Graduated in 1987 in Medicine and Surgery at the University of the Sacro Cuore of Rome with a thesis in Orthopedics: “Cortico-spongosis grafts with fibrin glue: experimental study”.

From 1987 to 1992 he specialized in Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the Università Cattolica of Rome. Subsequently he made several experiences both in outpatient and in hospital. Today he works as First Level Medical Director at the Orthopaedic Clinic of the Università Politecnica of Marche. 

Since 2008 he has been working in the field of Biotechnology, becoming a permanent researcher at the Orthopaedic Clinic of the Università Politecnica of Marche belonging to the Department of Clinical and Molecular Sciences. Since April 2013 he is Director of the Laboratory of Biomechanics and Biomaterials of the Department of Clinical and Molecular Sciences of the Università Politecnica of Marche.

He also carries out teaching activities and since 2007 he has been teaching Locomotor Apparatus Diseases in the Degree Course (CdL) of Prevention Technician in environments and workplaces, in the CdL of Nursing and in the CdL of Medicine and Surgery.

Since 2016 he has been Director of the School of Specialization in Orthopaedics and Traumatology of the Università Politecnica of Marche Region.

He is the author of 129 scientific publications indexed on Scopus and Google Scholar, in addition to having participated in the editing of 14 books. 

He has collaborated in numerous international projects (HORIZON 2020, BRITE-EURAM BREU CT94 0915, Italian Space Agency, CARIVERONA Project, CELL FACTORY).

He is an active member of numerous associations:

SIOT: Since 1987 member of the Italian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (S.I.O.T.) and in the two-year period 2010-2012 member of the Board of Directors and of the Tissue Regeneration Commissions, DRG and Scholarships. Since 2012 he is a member of the SIOT Commission for DRGs.

IORS – EORS: Member since the foundation of the Italian Orthopaedic Research Society (I.O.R.S.), member of the Board of Directors since 2008, Vice President for the three-year period 2012-2014, President for the three-year period 2015-2017 and currently Past-President. Member of the European Orthopaedic Research Society (E.O.R.S.).

SOTIC: Member since 1996.

EFORT: Member since the foundation of the European Federation of National Association of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (E.F.O.R.T.) and since 2010 member of the “European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology”, European Commission for the evaluation of the exercise of the specialist profession for non-EU citizens.

GIRC – SIAGASCOT – ESSKA: He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Group for the study of reparative processes of osteo-cartilaginous tissues (G.I.R.C.) as national responsible for “histological analysis of biopsies after autologous chondrocytes grafting”. After the confluence of G.I.R.C., he participates in the board of the Italian Society of Knee, Arthroscopy, Sport, Cartilage, Orthopaedic Technologies (S.I.G.A.S.O.T.) as a member of the Cartilage (2006-2008), Scientific (2008-2010), Orthopaedic Technologies (2010-2012), Research (2012-2014) and Cartilage (2014-2016) Commissions.

Member at large of the European Society of Sports traumatology, Knee surgery and Arthroscopy (E.S.K.A.).

SICS&G: Member since foundation, participates in the board of directors of the Italian Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (S.I.C.S&G.) as a member of the Research Commission.

Author of 3 patents, he currently holds the position of Director of the School of Specialization in Orthopaedics and Traumatology of the Università Politecnica of Marche Region.
