An equine enzymatically deantigenated bone graft shows similar performance to allograft in acetabular revision surgery

The aim of the present study was the assessment of bone xenografts (equine) in acetabular revision surgeries. Twenty-eight patients underwent revision surgery, by grafting a revision acetabular cup together with an equine bone substitute in the form of cortical or cancellous sheets and, when necessary, of cancellous bone chips. The outcome was assessed clinically and radiographically, at different times after surgery (1, 3, 6, 12 months and then every year). Clinically, the scale used (Merlè -D’Aubigne – Postel) showed an increase from 5 to 13.

X-rays showed no sign of aseptic detachment, nor early resorption of the bone graft which, in conclusion, showed – at least on a short term basis – similar results to homologous freeze-dried bone from tissue banks.
