The performance of bone substitutes may also be studied through the analysis of the gene expression they induce.

The sheet summarizes the results of four studies in vitro concerning the gene expression of four different types of stem cells, obtained from peripheral blood, bone marrow, adipose tissue and dental pulp, respectively, as well as of primary human osteoblasts, when placed in contact with Osteoplant (Bioteck). The results of all the considered studies indicate that Osteoplant can encourage osteogenesis by positively modulating the expression of a significant number of genes, in both the early and advanced stages of osteogenesis.
