Use of an equine pericardium membrane as a dural substitute
Today’s clinical case involves a 50-year-old patient who presented to the surgeon’s attention with bitemporal hemianopsia.
MRI analysis showed the presence of a pituitary adenoma, for which trans-nasal-sphenoidal removal was planned.
At the end of surgery, CSF leakage was observed, due to a small arachnoid lesion, which was treated by use of the Heart® pericardium membrane.
Heart® pericardium membrane is characterized by a medium-to-long protection time of 3-4 months, high tissue adhesiveness, and excellent tensile strength. It is also impermeable to CSF, thus enabling the fabrication of a “watertight” dural reconstruction.
Heart® pericardium membrane can be attached by suture or fibrin glue.
