Use of collagen membrane MeRG® for the repair of a chondral lesion of the patella
Today we present a case carried out by the team of Dr. Gianluca Bisinella (at the Hospital of Monselice Schiavonia, Padova, Italy) on the use of a collagen membrane for the treatment of a patellar chondral lesion after post-traumatic knee osteoarthritis.
The 25-year-old patient, almost two years after treatment of a multifragmentary fracture of the left patella, presented a chronic inflammatory state. Magnetic resonance imaging showed obvious involvement of the patellar cartilage and some signs of initial osteonecrosis in the patellar cancellous bone.
Therefore, surgical intervention was performed with MeRG® collagen membrane in combination with microperforations of the subchondral bone. The membrane was soaked with autologous bone marrow concentrate extracted from the iliac crest and placed to cover the medial and lateral facets of the patella.
MeRG® is a type I collagen-based membrane that, by creating a biological chamber, maintains mesenchymal cells in situ for a period of 2-3 months, thus accelerating tissue regeneration.
MRI performed 6 months after surgery showed an improvement of the patellofemoral relationship and patellar cancellous tissue. The surgery also resulted in a marked decrease in pain symptoms and….
