Are all biomaterials the same? Comparative in vitro study between heterologous biomaterials with different forms of collagen and ß-TCP

We are pleased to announce the publication of a new in vitro study published in the international journal Minerva Dental and Oral Science.

The research, carried out at the San Raffaele laboratories in Milan and led by Prof. Danilo Alessio di Stefano, president-elect of the IAO, analyzed the biological properties of two equine bone grafts, comparing them with a synthetic material, β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP).

The two variants of equine-derived biomaterials corresponded to grafts of preserved bone collagen (Osteoxenon®) and hydrolyzed bone collagen (Bio-Gen®), both produced through the Zymo-Teck® (Bioteck SpA) enzymatic deantigenation process at controlled temperatures.

To evaluate their biological properties, the biomaterials were placed in contact with the cells, analyzing fundamental parameters such as cell viability, adhesion, osteogenic differentiation, and gene expression related to bone remodeling.

While cells exposed to β-TCP showed limited activity, cells cultured on bone grafts with preserved or hydrolyzed collagen showed varying degrees of differentiation. In particular, when in the presence of preserved collagen…
