Gum recession: use of a collagen matrix in the advanced coronal flap technique

Today we present the results of a retrospective comparative study conducted by Dr. Giacomo Tarquini (Rome, Italy) on the use of the Xenomatrix® three-dimensional collagen matrix as a substitute for connective tissue grafting in the Coronally Advanced Flap (CAF) technique in 50 clinical cases.

Xenomatrix® is a special three-dimensional collagen matrix derived from equine tendons through an advanced biochemical process. It is designed for the treatment of RT1 gingival recessions (Class I and II according to Miller), avoiding the need for autologous tissue harvesting and promoting soft tissue healing in the post-extraction socket.

Once grafted, Xenomatrix® acts as a matrix capable of serving as a scaffold for the patient’s connective tissue cells. It supports the natural hemostatic process, and its placement is facilitated by its ability to adhere to tissues.

After 12 months, the two groups were clinically homogeneous, with no significant differences in the evaluated parameters. The results with Xenomatrix® are comparable to those obtained with connective tissue grafting, offering an effective and less invasive alternative.

Using Xenomatrix®, mean root coverage and complete recession coverage were achieved, which were respectively of…
