The sheet sums up the outcome of two papers published in 2009 on the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research and on Clinical Oral Implant Research (COIR). The same experimental methodology was applied in both studies to investigate the behavior of human osteoclasts cultured on two different bone substitutes of animal origin: the Osteoxenon substitute (Osteoplant OX, Bioteck, Italy), produced from equine bone made bio- compatible through the Zymo-Teck low temperature enzyme process (<60°C), and the Bio-Oss substitute (Bio- Oss, Geistlich, Switzerland), obtained by treating bovine bone at high temperature (>600°C). Experimental conditions being equal, the number of osteoclasts that adhere to the equine origin bone substitute treated by enzymatic process is significantly higher than observed on the bovine origin substitute treated by thermal process.
