Soft tissue healing in socket preservationprocedures may be promoted by using a collagen matrix.

The sheet sums up the case of a 55-year-old patient undergoing extraction of two adjacent dental elements, both compromised. One of the two sockets underwent a socket preservation procedure by grafting biomaterial and protection with the collagen Xenomatrix; the other socket was allowed to heal spontaneously. In both cases the gingival margins were stabilized with a cross stitch.

From a clinical point of view, quicker soft tissue healing was observed at the site where the collagen matrix was grafted. Histologic examination showed that in the biopsy of the matrix graft, the soft and hard tissue were present in two clearly separate layers, while in the one taken at the site allowed to heal spontaneously, the soft tissue appeared hypertrophic and even invaded part of the deeper socket portion.
