Study on the use of heterologous biomaterials in hip prosthesis revisions

Today we present the results of a study on 55 hip prosthesis revision surgeries involving complex acetabular defects (Type II and Type III), performed at the Centro di Eccellenza Sostituzioni Articolari Toscana in Fucecchio (Florence, Italy) and published in the European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology.

To reconstruct the missing bone stock, a flexible equine bone graft was chosen in many cases: the Osteoplant® Flex acetabular mat, positioned beneath the prosthetic cup to fill the bone gap. In more complex cases, Osteoplant® Chips—cancellous bone chips—were also used, sometimes mixed with Osteoplant® bone pastes to ensure greater stability.

All Bioteck substitutes used are derived from equine bone tissue and treated with Zymo-Teck®, the exclusive process that removes antigenic components while preserving collagen in its native conformation. The Osteoplant® Flex acetabular mat, thanks to its flexibility, adapts perfectly to the curved contours of the prosthetic cup, while chips and pastes are ideal for larger defects. The pastes contain demineralized bone matrix (DBM), known for its osteopromotive effect.

The results confirm that equine bone substitutes represent a valid alternative to autologous materials, ensuring adaptability and stability while promoting bone regeneration in complex revisions.
