The revision of hip prostheses with bone substitutes of equine origin

BASB | Lettera del direttore

The combination of heterologous bone grafts with preserved collagen and bone pastes containing DBM restore successfully the bone stock in hip prosthesis revision. In the last decades, the prosthetic rehabilitation of the hip has become a common procedure. Despite the wide availability of this type of surgery, a progressive loosening of the main components of the prosthesis is seen, over time, in approximately 60% of cases, due to the intense mechanical stresses at the interface with the patient’s bone tissue. The bone deficit may be compensated with autologous and homologous grafts. However, to avoid the increase of morbidity in the former case and to counterbalance the lack of tissue banks and the variability in quality of the homologous bone, the use of bone substitutes of heterologous origin is a valid alternative, provided that they have specific biological and mechanical resistance features. Todays's sheet summarizes the results of 55 patients (38 women and 17 men, average age 70 ± 12) who underwent a revision procedure of a hip prosthesis in the three-year period 2010-2013.
