Clinical efficacy of hydrolyzed collagen in a multicentric study on 70 patients

BASB | Lettera del direttore

Hydrolyzed collagen is the new frontier of biological and non-pharmacological treatment for pain reduction and functional recovery of tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints. A multicentric study on 70 patients, published in 2020 in the prestigious journal International Orthopedics (Volpi et al. 2020), highlights the efficacy of the intra-articular administration of low molecular weight hydrolyzed collagen (CHondroGrid, Bioteck SpA). The patients treated were affected by osteoarthrosis including all grades of Kellgren-Lawrence scale. The results show a dramatic reduction of pain and of the functional recovery of the joints. Conclusions are based on VAS, WOMAC and LEQUESNE indexes, monitored with a follow-up higher than 6 months from the last treatment.

THE NEW LITERATURE BOOKLET IS ONLINE!

BASB | Lettera del direttore

Dear Readers, I am pleased to announce the 2021 version of the Bioteck Bibliography containing over 350 publications. There are some important news that you can find in the new booklet: 1) We have added new references related to the similarities of bone tissue in mammals and in particular on the qualities of equine collagen for the production of medical devices (Gallo N. et al, J. Funct. Biomater. 2020); 2) The references in the orthopedic sector are now over 60, and include works on the use of Bioteck devices in the treatment of osteoarthritis, bone cysts, prosthesis revisions and traumatology; 3) The references in the dental sector have increased by 28 publications: among these we report 4 about the use of the exclusive Bioteck cortical bone membrane in different surgical contexts and 2 relating to the use of the innovative Activabone bone paste in the putty format for the management of the post-extractive socket.

Sinus lift with collagen-preserved equine bone substitutes

BASB | Lettera del direttore

The sheet we have the pleasure to present today sums up the results of two papers published on the International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants concerning the use of Osteoxenon equine origin bone granules in maxillary sinus lift cases. The first is a prospective randomized study conducted on 40 patients, treated alternatively with deproteinized bovine bone or with collagen-preserved, enzymatically treated equine bone. Histomorphometric analysis at 6 months from the regeneration surgery showed that the collagen- preserved biomaterial exhibited almost double quantity of newly formed bone and one third residual biomaterial compared to the deproteinized bovine bone. The second is a retrospective study that involved 77 subjects, from whom 115 biopsies were taken. All patients had undergone sinus lift with collagen- preserved bone granules. The study showed how, already 3-5 months later, the quantity of newly formed bone was suitable to perform implant insertion. Both studies show how and to what extent heterologous bone substitutes with preserved collagen can enhance bone formation and reduce the re-entry time for implant placement.
