Radial head arthroplasty using an heterologous equine pericardium membrane

BASB | Lettera del direttore

Today we want to focus on a clinical case showing the treatment of painful joint deficit of the elbow of a young patient, still in growth phase, through the resection of the radial head. A HEART pericardium membrane is used to protect the open bone surface of the radial head previously treated, in order to recreate a facing surface with the capitulum humeri coated with fibrous material to prevent painful friction. HEART pericardium membrane is obtained starting from the natural equine pericardium tissue, which is characterized by an interlaced structure of collagen fibers. Thanks to the Zymo-Teck process, the exclusive enzymatic treatment, the three-dimensional structure of the collagen fibers is preserved. This allows the HEART membrane to be sutured and to display an optimal mechanical resistance to traction. The clinical and radiographic results at 18 months from the surgery were positive highlighting how...

Socket preservation with the aid of a collagen matrix

BASB | Lettera del direttore

Today we present a clinical case showing how the three-dimensional collagenic matrix (Xenomatrix®) support the second intention healing of the soft tissues after the post-extractive socket preservation procedure. Once immobilized with a couple of cross-stitches and left exposed, the collagenic matrix is the suitable substrate for the adhesion and the proliferation of fibroblasts, securing an optimal healing of the soft tissues by second intention. Moreover, the collagenic matrix protects the bone substitute used in the socket preservation procedure and favors its remodeling and volumetric maintainment. The clinical case highlights the soft tissue healing in the first 40 days and report the follow-up at 1 year from the bone regeneration procedure, showing how…

Additional tibial osteotomy through the use of heterologous bone wedges

BASB | Lettera del direttore

Today we focus on a clinical study where Osteoplant bone wedge was employed for the treatment of the varus knee in 24 patients affected by osteoarthritis, through two different tibial osteotomy approaches. In 11 cases, the conventional technique was used while in 13 cases the computer-assisted technique was employed. Osteoplant wedge originates from an equine bone treated with the exclusive enzymatic process named Zymo-Teck. This industrial procedure preserves the bone collagen and leaves the mineral component unaffected, favoring a physiological recognition of the bone substitute by the cells involved in the bone regeneration. Such properties allows Osteoplant wedge to be completely remodeled with the patient’s bone. The clinical results, evaluated by the international scores Visual Analog Scale and American Knee Society Score at 39 months from the surgery, were all positive, highlighting that….
