We present today a clinical case from Dr. Giuliano Garlini (Milan, Italy). A 76-year-old patient presented to the doctor’s office with a root fracture at element 36, caused by the presence of a screw inside the root. The tooth was deemed unrecoverable and was extracted.
At 3 months after extraction, there was evidence of complete soft tissue healing, however CBCT examination revealed a significant reduction in bone thickness, necessitating Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) surgery in conjunction with implant placement.
Once the implants were placed, slow-resorbing equine granules (Calcitos®) were used to maintain volume around the last coils of the implants. A resorbable equine pericardium membrane (Heart®) was applied to protect the bone graft because of its long protection time, suitable for the best remodeling of a slow-resorbing bone graft.
Calcitos® is obtained from equine bone through a heat treatment process capable of removing the organic components of bone, including collagen.
Heart® is distinguished by the natural intertwining of collagen fibers found on equine pericardium. Its special structure provides excellent suture resistance and a protection time of 3-4 months.
A follow-up CBCT examination at 6 months showed…
